She remains mute for several days and after that starts to ask for her other mother.  It was intriguing at first to try and figure out the mystery of Ava telling her mother Anna that she wants to go see her other mother.

The story is set in Germany during the Nazi rule. It is about a family of four who lives in Berlin. Bruno a 9-year-old boy is the protagonist and the narrator. His father is an army commandant, his mother a housewife and his sister who we get to learn that they do not always get along. One day Bruno comes to his room to find their servant packing his belongings.

My African literature read took me all the way to Zimbabwe through NoViolet Bulawayo’s book – We Need New Names. This book is about Darling, a 10-year-old girl living in the lower middle-class area in Zimbabwe. It tells of her time growing up in an underprivileged neighbourhood where she and her friends spend their days stealing guavas from the neighbouring upper-class neighbourhood near their home.
